One of Bridget's stories (as told by Lilith Maeve):

You know how irritating it is when people turn off their cellphones, their pagers, and aren't on their computers? What are you supposed to do when you want to go out? Or show them the new poem you wrote? What if you just want to sing them this song that's been knocking around your head? Or to remind them to drink the tea you made them?

And they're not answering anything! And you know they're home. You can hear them through the thin walls of the apartment building you're all living in and you pretend it's because you're all so bohemian but really it's because you're all broke and mom and dad aren't sending any more money.

And really, suffering for your art is okay and everything, but it's better when people aren't inexcessible!

There's this new club downtown and I know I could get us in free (bouncers always think I'm cute) and we could probably weasel some drinks but noooooooo, no one is picking up anything!

There's got to be another way to get people's attention. I know it. Think. Think.

What if I . . .just? Like this? And blow really hard? I think that will make some kind of bizzaro shrill noise which maybe they'll mistake it for the smoke detector because someone left their hotplate on again and maybe the building is on fire and we'll all get thrown out.

Excellent.

I think . . .I will call it whistling.
